Vaping May Harm the Lung

Chemicals in e-cigarettes can damage lung tissue. E-cigarettes contain nicotine which is highly addictive. Researchers tested the effects of nicotine which caused inflammation in lung tissue. Vaping liquids contain solvents transformed into carbonyls which include formaldehyde and other compounds that are known or suspected of causing cancer. Some liquids used in e-cigarettes have been shown to contain heavy metals, silicates and other materials which can be toxic to the lungs. Irian Petrache, who is a doctor and lung specialist at Indiana University in Indianapolis, and her research team concluded that vaping would be no better for the lungs than cigarette smoking. https://www.sciencenewsforstudents.org/article/vaping-may-harm-lung

Chinese Space Station

The Chinese space station Tiangong- is falling towards earth sometime at the end of March or in the beginning of April. In 2016 Chinese officers said that they had lost control of the space station, which would de-orbit, breaking apart and burning up the planets atmosphere. The Chinese space station will hit the planet somewhere north of the bottom of Australia and south of top of the United States. Researcher calculated that the odds of anyone getting hit by space junk are roughly in 1 in 3,200. European space agency estimates that the likely hood of getting hit by a piece of Tiangong-1 is 10 million times smaller than the yearly chance of getting hit by lightning. Researchers believe that even if parts of the station do hit land, it still unlikely that they will hit someone. https://www.popsci.com/chinese-space-station-falling-out-sky

Termites are Cockroach

Scientists discovered that termites belong to the cockroach group called Blattodea. Researchers reported that several groups of microbes that digest wood in termite guts live in some wood-eating cockroaches. One biologist used DNA to figure out that termites evolved as a branch on the many-limned family tree of cockroaches. Cryptocercus roaches live in almost termite like style in the Appalachian Mountains. Monogamous pairs of Cryptocercus roaches eat tunnels in wood and raise young there. After years of debate, the American entomologists' organization voted to switch the new view of termites and the common names of individual termite species remained. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/its-official-termites-are-just-cockroaches

Human Skin Bacteria Have Caner-Fighting Powers

Certain skin-dwelling microbes may lead to drugs that treat or prevent skin cancer. Chemical makes compound that stops DNA formation in tumor cells. Mice slathered with one strain of Staphylococcus epidermidis that makes the compound developed fewer tumors after exposure to damaging ultraviolet radiation compared with those treated with a strain lacking the compound. Staphylococcal species have many bacteria that live on human skin. A strain of S. epidermidis that made a compound-6-N-hydroxyamninopourine (6-HAP) was discovered from antimicrobial powers of bacteria. The researchers estimated that 20 percent of the human population have S. epidermidis strains that make 6-HAP on their skin which may prevent skin caner cells, block DNA synthesis in lymphomas cells, and cancerous immune system cells. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/human-skin-bacteria-have-cancer-fighting-powers

Choosing To Amplify

Male crickets are known for their calls to attract females especially the tree crickets. Tree crickets are known for using leaves to amplify their calls. However, in recent years only very few of these crickets use these leaves to baffle their calls. Scientist have found that when using leaves to maximize their calls, crickets use the perfect size leaves and revamp it to make the perfect call. Researchers have discovered that whether to baffle their calls with leaves or not is strictly inherited. Although tree crickets have the ability to baffle their calls they rarely do so because their pay be a price to pay. http://science.sciencemag.org/content/358/6370/twil

Long Sleeves on Doctors' White Coats May Spread Germs

Winter Solstice Thanks

      • Edited for clarity; Why We Should Give Thanks for the Winter Solstice

Today marks the first day of Winter in North America and the first day of Summer in South America.

      • You do not need to capitalize the seasons; Today marks the first day of winter in North America and the first day of summer in South America.

The Winter Solstice and the summer Solstice are the longest and shortest days of the year.

      • Edited for capitalization; I would also specify which solstice is the longest and which is the shortest; The winter solstice and the summer solstice are the longest and shortest days of the year.

This is a good opportunity to imagine what a day would look like if we lived on another planet because most planets like Venus can't see the Solstice.

      • Edited for clarity and comma usage; This is a good opportunity to imagine what a day would look like from another planet, because most planets, like Venus, cannot see the solstices.

If the Artic Cirlce didn't begin 66 degrees North of the equator it would effect how much light the Northern hemisphere would recieve during the Winter months.

      • Edited for spelling, word choice, and capitalization; If the Arctic Circle didn't begin 66 degrees north of the Equator it would affect how much light the Northern Hemisphere would receive during the winter months.

Also if the Earth wasn't tilted the Northern hemisphere would have complete darkness during the Winter season.

      • Edited for comma usage; Also, if the Earth wasn't tilted, the Northern Hemisphere would have complete darkness during the winter season.

Since the Earth is tilted we have proper sun light that keeps us warm and alive.
